Blog Tour: Standing by China Dennington

Today I'm happy to be a part of the blog tour for Standing by China Dennington (the youngest author I've ever had the pleasure of reading a book from)!

In fourteen-year-old China Dennington’s first novel, two future tyrants hold the world in an iron grip.

Humanity is about to meet its doom. An empathic girl from the past is called to action by a group of technologically advanced mermaids.

    An apocalypse is coming.

Along with fellow time traveler, Force, she is sent to the future as the last hope for humanity. The stakes are high, the odds against her. Can she overcome her fears and step into her destiny? Can she lead a people to victory who lost hope long ago?

My Review
3.5 Stars
I was very impressed that China Dennington wrote this book at the age thirteen, and published it at the age of fourteen. That takes talent and nerve, which she obviously posseses a lot of! The writing style was beautiful - I really enjoyed her descriptive word choices.

I enjoyed reading Standing. Gale, Force, and all of the other characters were intriguing and relateable. I've always enjoyed empathetic characters, and it was very interesting to see things through the feelings Gale felt from others and the effect it played on the story as a whole. Gale was a very strong heroine with amazing leadership abilities, and Force was super smart. I loved the aspect of special time travelers that travel through the water into the future to save the world. The futuristic world and all that was discovered was very fun to read about, and I loved the flamien (read it and find out what it is), and the well developed epilogue!

The character dynamics were well played out, and I enjoyed reading the interactions between them.

The third person point of view was different from what I am used to reading, and it took some getting used to. It didn't detract from the story, but it sometimes made it feel like there was a lot of distance between the reader and the characters making it just a little harder to get into.

This is the perfect book to read if you want a light dystopian, time travel novel. Problems are serious, but they are easily yet sensibly solved really quickly. The characters show their strengths and their weeknesses, and there is a side of humor and pain. If you are looking for an intriguing new world, then go read Standing!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion and all thoughts and opinions are solely my own.
